Surrey Osteofit classes promote strong bones

As the population ages, there’s an increasing demand for safe, effective exercise programs, says Debbie Cheong, Osteofit provincial coordinator at BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre.
Seniors are wanting health information and programs helping them stay mobile and independent, she says.
Based on research and best practices, the Osteofit program of education, lifestyle management and exercise was developed by BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre’s Osteoporosis program.
“Osteofit is a safe and gently-paced activity to improve strength and reduce the risk of falls,” says Cheong. She adds the classes provide a link between physiotherapy and group fitness for those concerned about falls and fractures.
The Osteofit program is designed to improve posture, strength, balance and coordination as well as functional ability, independence and quality of life. It’s safe for those with osteoporosis, a condition of decreased bone strength.
In addition, the agility activities encourage playfulness and lots of laughter – both healthy activities.
Cheong says Osteofit is not just for the frail elderly. The fun-filled program accommodates individuals from the wheelchair bound to the fit and physically active.
With an emphasis on safety and gentleness, Osteofit is a popular choice for seniors and can be found in seniors’ centres, community recreation, physiotherapy clinics, assisted living care facilities and private independent living residences.
Cheong says Osteofit is taught by registered fitness leaders who have taken special training from BC Women’s Hospital.
In Surrey, Osteofit classes are available at Guildford Recreation Centre, Newton Seniors Centre, and White Rock Leisure Services.
