Celebrate Diwali - festival of lights
The lighting of small candles, or diyas, symbolizes the triumph of good over evil during the South Asian celebration of Diwali.
More than 500 guests are expected at a Diwali celebration presented by the Surrey Foundation this weekend.
Diwali is recognized worldwide, marking the beginning of the South Asian new year and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.
A typical celebration might include the lighting of candles or diyas, displaying fresh flowers, exchanging cards and gifts, buying new clothes, meeting friends and enjoying foods of all sorts.
The fourth annual Diwali Festival of Lights takes place at Bollywood Banquet Hall on Oct. 17 and will include a meet-and-greet reception, buffet dinner and performances by various South Asian music and dance groups.
Funds raised will support the Surrey Foundation’s efforts in the non-profit community and support the South Fraser Women’s Services Society Youth Leadership Conference and violence against women prevention initiatives.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at #201-8166 128 St. Tickets are $40, available by calling 604-591-2699.
