Stroke clubs offer support

The Surrey branch of the Stroke Recovery Association of B.C. participated in the “Strides for Stroke” walk on June 14 in White Rock. The walk was a joint effort to raise funds for each branch and also to raise awareness that there are places where stroke survivors can go to get extra rehabilitation for speech and physiotherapy.

The branches also provide companionship activities, outings and support for caregivers.

The walk was a great success. The top pledge raisers were Teresa Carrier of Surrey and Muriel Dove of the White Rock branch. The two clubs raised close to $10,000.

Each stroke recovery branch must raise their own operating expenses as they only receive nominal funds through a gaming grant and occasionally the Fraser Health Authority. Operating expenses such as rent and therapists depend entirely on community support.
