Local aboriginal singers up for national awards
Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson is nominated for a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award, as are the Surrey-based Haida Gwaii Singers.
The Surrey-based Haida Gwaii Singers have been nominated for a national music award.
One of the CDs from the box set “The Haida Gwaii Singers: Contemporary Anthology” is a finalist for a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award.
The CAMA awards are the highest honour bestowed by the national aboriginal community to aboriginal musicians. This year’s awards ceremony will be held in Hamilton, Ontario.
White Rock resident Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson’s CD “Lalaxaaygans: Beautiful Sound” is also a finalist for the Best Female Traditional Cultural category, which will be awarded at the Awards Ceremony on Nov. 27. Williams-Davidson will also be performing at the music awards gala, which is billed as featuring “some of the best Aboriginal Musicians from across Canada.” (For more information, see www.canab.com.)
Last year, Williams-Davidson was honoured with the prestigious CAMA “Keeper of Traditions” special honour award for her lifetime dedication to Haida musical traditions. Bruce Ruddell, the producer for the Haida Gwaii Singers Legacy Project, was also honoured with the equally prestigious “Industry Builder” special honour award.
“We are extremely happy that Haida music is being recognized in the aboriginal-music community. It is a beautiful and strong genre of music that has been around for thousands of years. The enjoyment of our music is going beyond our boundaries,” said Reg Davidson, president of the society.
The Surrey-based society, the Haida Gwaii Singers released a Contemporary Anthology box set in 2008 and an Archival Anthology box set in 2009. Both box sets, as well as limited quantities of a Collector Box set, are available on-line at www.haidagwaiisingers.ca or through the Society at info@haidagwaiisingers.ca or by calling 604-536-5541.
