Aladdin auditions approach

The Fraser Valley Gilbert and Sullivan Society is holding auditions for its 23rd exciting musical comedy pantomime, Aladdin, where you will see genies, princesses, princes, emperors, viziers, villagers, courtiers, palace men and women, and dancing handmaidens.

A large cast of men, women and children are required for the 14 available lead parts, as well as chorus and junior chorus (ages eight to 13).

Hopefuls are asked to prepare a verse and chorus from two contrasting songs (eg. one musical theatre number and the other in the style of your choice). You may only be asked to sing one number. An accompanist will be provided, so bring sheet music in the appropriate key. If you don’t have sheet music, a cassette tape or CD track without vocals is also acceptable.

Led by artistic directors Mike Balser and Cathy Wilmot, choreographer Carol Seitz, music director Stewart Yu, and producer Arne Larsen, auditions will be held in Surrey and North Delta on Thursday, Sept. 3 and Tuesday, Sept. 8. Callbacks are set for Sept. 10.

Due to the anticipated large number of responses, auditions will be by appointment. To book an appointment, send an e-mail to aladdinproducer@gmail.com. To assist with scheduling, indicate name, gender, age and interest in chorus, dancer, and/or lead. A return e-mail will be sent with an audition date, time and location.

Aladdin rehearsals begin on Sept. 13 and will be held on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Performance dates are scheduled for Nov. 25 to Dec. 6 at the Surrey Arts Centre.
