Funk, folk on tap

The Wheat In The Barley will be bringing their fusion of folk tunes and funky rhythms back to the Coast Capital Playhouse, 1532 Johnston Rd. on Saturday, Aug. 15, 8 p.m.

The popular South Surrey band's appearance is the second in White Rock Players Club's ongoing series of Music In The Theatre fundraising concerts, following on the successful sold out debut concert featuring jazz vocalist, and series co-organizer, Wendy Bollard.

"The Wheat In The Barley are a fantastic band and have such a huge following in White Rock that we know they will sell out, too," said Geoff Giffin, director of the fundraising committee of the Players Club.

"The Music In The Theatre series is just starting, but we can already see its potential and hope to grow it in the coming years to be a staple in the diet of all music lovers and theatre-goers in and around White Rock and the Greater Vancouver area."

For more than a decade, The Wheat In The Barley has been giving new life to classic traditional tunes, infusing the folk repertoire with a myriad of musical flavours from around the world.

Although they started with a distinctly west coast sound, the group have evolved into a Canadian roots band drawing on a coast-to-coast heritage which can include everything from blues and Klezmer to jazz improvisation and rock beats.

Innovative interpretations of French Canadian fiddle tunes and songs from the Maritimes join original songs by group leader, guitarist and singer Steve Gidora and fiddler Nicole Scoffield, as well as upbeat instrumentals by multi-instrumentalist Victor Smith.

Adding energy to the mix is the versatility of wind specialist Mark Dowding (flute, whistles, harmonica and saxes) and the unerring, inventive rhythm provided by bassist Mickey Hovan and percussionist Ed Johnson.

Tickets ($20) are available from Tapestry Music or the Coast Capital Playhouse (604-536-7535) or wrpctix@uniserve.com
