Surrey's Elicia Mackenzie has won a national theatre award for her lead role in a Toronto production of The Sound of Music.

Mackenzie, who landed the role of Maria von Trapp after beating out hundreds of hopefuls girls on the CBC show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, has been performing the classic musical at the Princess of Wales Theatre since last October.

On Monday night, the 24-year-old won a Dora Mavor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role. The Doras are named for Dora Mavor Moore, a well-loved teacher and director who helped establish Canadian professional theatre in the 1930s and 1940s. They are presented annually.
