The characters we create

If we are all actors on the stage of our lives, how do we characterize ourselves?

The paintings, drawings, photographs and sculpture in the exhibition Recent Acquisitions: Persona Socialis consider the concept of persona – the public identities created through our choices in clothing and actions.

Drawn from the Gallery’s permanent collection, the works are by B.C. artists who explore the various characters we assume in the public sphere and those that we project onto others.

Artists include Susan Edelstein, Toni Latour, Ken Lum, David Neal, Al Neil, Robert Genn, Mariana Schmidt and Jin-me Yoon.

The majority of works in this exhibition were acquired into the Permanent Collection over the past two years. Many of the works were donated by artists and collectors.

The Permanent Collection of the Surrey Art Gallery is small but focused. It currently consists of over 380 pieces of contemporary art acquired since the Gallery’s inception in 1975. The collection is used primarily as a teaching tool. Works must be representative of the artist’s body of work, and must have the potential to be used in multiple exhibitions to assist visitors in understanding the ideas and history of contemporary art since 1975.

Persona Socialis runs until Sept. 21 at the Surrey Art Gallery, 13750 88 Ave. Admission to exhibitions is by donation.
