It appears there will be help this Christmas for thousands of Surrey's less fortunate after all.
After months of searching for an adequate space from which to operate, the Surrey Christmas Bureau has finally secured a spot.
Argo Ventures Inc., Martello Property Services Inc., and Hudge Parmar of Cushman & Wakefield LePage stepped up and have provided the holiday charity a home in the Cedar Hills Plaza at 96 Avenue and 128 Street.
"Their donation will ensure the SCB's work will allow those in need to enjoy Christmas 2009," said executive director Konch Bakshi this week.
The Surrey Christmas Bureau put out a call in August for someone to donate a warehouse space to sort toys and gifts, and where those in need could register for assistance. But in more than two months, nothing suitable was offered.
Until this week.
The Surrey Christmas Bureau has been collecting and distributing toys and hampers to those in need for nearly 40 years. More than 1,800 families and 4,000 children were helped by the organization last year and this year's need is expected to be even greater.
Registration begins Nov. 9 and continues until Dec. 15.
Those seeking assistance must reside in Surrey and be a low income family with one or more children 15 years of age or under. Picture identification, a B.C. Care Card for everyone in the family, proof of income (pay stubs, EI, GAIN, student loan notice of assessment), proof of residents (utility, phone bills) and a letter from spouse certifying joint application are required.
The Surrey Christmas Bureau is located at 12830 96 Ave. Hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m.
