Kwomais funding announced

Two buildings at Kwomais Point Park will receive $82,500 in federal funding for restoration.
The announcement was made last week by MP Russ Hiebert (South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale), who visited the site at 128 Street and Marine Drive with Surrey Coun. Mary Martin.
“The renovations at Kwomais will allow the City of Surrey to provide a greater range of physical recreation programs at the new park,” Hiebert said in a news release.
The site – 16.25 acres of designated parkland – was acquired by the city in 2007.
Last spring, the city had planned to have Sanford Hall and the Lodge buildings upgraded and ready for programming and bookings by January 2010. At that time, upgrades to the buildings and park were underway.
“Many in our community still have fond memories of attending Camp Kwomais,” Hiebert said.
“Now that the property is a Surrey park, I’m delighted that these facilities will once again be available for the enjoyment of former campers and so many others in our community.”
Hiebert also announced $66,667 in federal funding for the reconstruction of tennis courts at Greenaway Park in Cloverdale.
The funds are provided from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program, and both projects are funded in partnership with the City of Surrey.
