The City of Surrey officially opened it’s seventh artificial turf field at Newton Athletic Park last Saturday. The funding for this project came through the Canada-B.C. Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (CBCMRIF).
The cost was split three ways between the federal, provincial and municipal governments.
“This field will allow us to keep pace with growing demands for sport and recreation services within the Newton area” said Mayor Dianne Watts.
“This fits nicely with the City’s 2010 Olympic plan that aims to engage Surrey residents in keeping physically fit and further positioning Surrey as a national leader in sports development.”
Surrey’s 21,600 soccer enthusiasts, including 16,000 registered players, will benefit from this $2-million investment with a new year-round playing surface for the community.
Improvements include a 110-metre by 70-metre synthetic sports field and an 85-square-metre expansion of the field house.
Artificial turf field technology reduces the maintenance time for sport fields, making them a far more efficient infrastructure investment.
The Newton Artificial Turf project includes a refurbished field house, which will provide additional change rooms and washrooms and will feature energy-efficient lighting, heating and insulation.
“To keep pace with Surrey’s rapid growth and the growing demand for sports fields throughout Surrey, artificial turf playing fields offer an attractive and cost-saving alternative to grass fields,” said Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair of the Parks and Community Services Committee.
