Hospice needs volunteers

The Delta Hospice Society’s fall volunteer training session is coming up and early registration is encouraged. Delta Hospice volunteers working directly with families and are required to participate in a comprehensive training program to learn the basics of Delta Hospice Society’s philosophy and practice of care.

There are a variety of presenters throughout the 27.5-hour training program including health care professionals, clients, volunteers and hospice staff. The topics include listening and communication skills, self-awareness, pain and comfort care, living with dying, spirituality, self care, grief and loss, and a volunteer panel who present their experiences in the many different areas of service.

If you are interested in becoming a trained Delta Hospice volunteer, call coordinator of volunteers Chris Colero at 604-948-0660. A pre-course meeting will be scheduled so that participants will have a clear understanding of the course and the expected commitments.

The next training session is scheduled for Tuesday evenings and three Saturdays, running from Oct. 7 to Nov. 15 at the Care Centre, #115, 1077 56 St. The fee for the program is $65, which covers a small portion of the cost and includes a binder with course materials.

The Delta Hospice Society provides quality care for individuals, families and community experiencing a life-threatening illness, end-of-life and bereavement. Delta Hospice is a non-profit charitable organization that must raise all its operational funding through donations, service agreements, grants and its Hospice Cottage Thrift Store.
