Register your child in the Burns Bog Conservation Society’s Wetland Adventures Summer Day Camp. The day camps run Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until August 15. Attention teens! This summer, be creative, have some fun and win cash. Enter Surrey Public Library’s Young Adult Writing Contest and create a short story, poem, or comic. Cash prizes will be awarded per category and age group. Donations

Hunger knows no season. The Surrey Food Bank is asking the community to help celebrate Christmas in July by organizing a food drive to collect non-perishable food items in July. The summer months are lean as people become busy with summer vacation plans, and the food bank needs to build up reserves to help make it through to Christmas. Contact Shirley Jensen at 604-581-5443 or e-mail development@surreyfoodbank.org for more information or to register your food drive.

Fundraising

Clear up misconceptions and get the facts on family health issues. This year, the Summer Health Institute is expanding. They are covering some more advanced content, and welcome questions for the instructors (you may submit yours when registering online). These free events are held at SFU Surrey on Thursday evenings throughout July and August from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Room 3170 at SFU Surrey, Central City, 13450 102 Ave. Presented by Continuing Health Education and SFU’s health counselling specialists, topics include: Get your family to eat their greens! (July 24), Fit for Life (July 31), Healthy Relationships (Aug. 7), Conflict and Communication in relationships (Aug. 14), Surviving Heart Break (Aug. 21), and Human Papillomavirus (Aug 28). Music

During the week of July 14, from Tuesday to Friday, Vicki St. Pierre will offer one-on-one, private, one-hour lessons and, on Friday, an evening master class for Surrey singers who wish to take advantage of this rare opportunity. Master class students will perform a piece that St. Pierre will critique in the group setting. She holds a Master of Music Degree in Music Performance from the University of Western Ontario and is currently completing her Doctor of Music program. She has been music director and conductor of musical theatre productions including Sondheim’s Into the Woods, Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe and Baum’s The Wizard of Oz. The Surrey Choral Arts Project Society wants you to join the Surrey Children’s Choir family of choirs for the 2008-2009 season. The Maple Leaf Singers Want You! Don’t hide your voice in the shower. This 45-voice show choir features talent from across the Lower Mainland and invites male and female singers to audition for the upcoming season. Join team members, coaches and dignitaries as the City of Surrey welcomes the U.S. Speedskating team to South Surrey for a training camp. The welcome ceremony and community BBQ takes place July 14 at 11:30 a.m. at the South Surrey Arena, 1925 148 St. A training session open for public viewing takes place from 9-10:30 a.m. The team consists of 18 athletes and four staff members. Volunteers

The Canadian Red Cross is seeking caring and committed community members to become Volunteer Prevention Educators for the RespectED: Violence & Abuse Prevention program. Fluency in English is essential. Volunteers receive comprehensive training and are certified to deliver Child Abuse & Relationship Violence Prevention presentations to youth aged 12-18 in local schools and community centres. Training begins September 24. PICS Assisted Living is looking for volunteers to assist the seniors at various points. Volunteers will also schedule to assist in organizing special events, performing reception duties and escorting seniors during outside activities such as shopping, and walking. Help the environment and join other volunteers at Brownsville Park along Fraser River for the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This event will be a perfect opportunity for school groups, community groups, families and concerned individuals to get involved in a hands-on conservation program. It provides a chance to become involved with an activity that has a real, measurable effect in the environment both locally and globally. Cleanups are more than just collecting trash, they are examples of communities working together to create solutions that ensure our oceans and waterways are kept clean. They will meet at Brownsville Park (at the foot of Old Yale Road) on Sept. 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteer appreciation lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. The event will happen rain or shine.
