It was a successful weekend for a pair of the Bayside Sharks’ younger squads, as the club’s U14 and U16 squads both rolled to impressive victories Sunday afternoon.
Playing the first game of the fall season, the Sharks’ U14 outfit used their speed to knock off Capilano – B.C.’s strongest club in recent years – in convincing fashion, 65-30.
Bayside’s outside backs accounted for 12 of the team’s tries, as the Sharks did their best to keep the ball away from the Caps’ strong forwards.
Max Wellis led the charge offensively for the Sharks, scoring three tries, while Gordon Dobson – who was able to break through the Capilano line numerous times – scored a pair, as did Liam Wilson, who was the team’s captain for the day, and Dane Gordon.
Other tries were notched by Brayden Wilson, J.P. Brennan, Andrew O’Connor and Jonas Win Hoogendoorn.
Daniel Johnston, who didn’t find his name on the scoresheet but did have a handful of steals in the game, was named man-of-the-match for Bayside.
The Sharks’ U14 team also earned a win Sunday against Capilano, edging the Vancouver-based club 22-12 at South Surrey Athletic Park.
The Sharks’ men’s squads, however, were not quite as fortunate. The first division side – made up of U23 prospects – dropped its game Saturday afternoon, 36-18 to Capilano, and the second division team also lost to the rival Vancouver club.
The U23s led the Caps 15-5 at halftime, but were unable to continue the momentum in the second half, which allowed the surging visiting club to take over.
“Our guys seemed to fade a little bit in the second, and that’s when the Caps happened to make a few substitutions and really hit their stride,” Bayside co-coach Tom Wilson said.
“They’re a very good team, and we played well in the beginning. It would’ve been nice to keep it going in the second half, but we just made a few bad decisions with the ball, and had a few breakdowns.
“But we still played about 100 times better than we did in our first game.”
Twins Spencer and Zach Thorpe each had a try in the loss, and Kirk Wyss – playing his first game of the year after missing last week’s game with a shoulder injury – had a conversion and booted a successful penalty kick.
“Kirk’s a real good leader for our team, and we’re happy to have him back,” Wilson said.
Next up on the schedule for the first division side is a home date against the Vancouver Rowing Club, with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m Saturday. The club’s second division sides will play at 1 p.m.
Unlike the Sharks and Capilano – both of whom are playing young teams of prospects this fall – the Rowing Club have so far this season fielded a veteran-laden crew.
Regardless, Wilson predicted his team would put forth a good effort Saturday.
“It’ll be tough, but we aren’t showing up just to lose,” he said.
