The minor football season began last weekend with all six White Rock-South Surrey Titans squads in action on the gridiron.
In flag division, the Blue Titans opened with a win over the Cloverdale Sabre-Cats, led by Rowan Frost, who had two touchdowns. Beckham Dickie added another TD.
In atom action, the White Titans were felled 32-0 by the Cloverdale Tigers, and the Blue Titans dropped a high-scoring 46-20 tilt on the road against the Langley Colts. In the latter contest, Michael Downhaniuk scored a pair of TDs, and Jaxon Russell had another, on a 65-yard run. On defence, Josh Hiebert had a quarterback sack.
The peewee Titans also opened the year with a tough road loss, falling 42-0 to the Langley Mavericks, but White Rock's junior bantam squad managed a 20-13 victory over the Coquitlam Vikings.
In bantam division play, the Titans racked up plenty of points – most in the second half – in a 40-12 whipping over the Richmond Raiders. On offence, the team was led by Willie Watson, Cole Meyer, Dima Povalayev and Antoine Kerouac-Dube, who made a highlight-reel catch and run play during the game.
The midget Titans opened their season on Vancouver Island, losing 26-6 to the Nanaimo Redmen. The Peninsula crew's lone touchdown was tallied by Nathan Leader.
This Sunday, the association hosts its annual Titans Day event, which will feature all six teams on the field at South Surrey Athetic Park. Games begin with flag division action at 9 a.m. and wrap up with a 6:45 p.m. midget contest between the Titans and North Delta Longhorns.
In addition to the action on the field, a barbecue, bouncy castle and dunk tank will keep audiences entertained throughout the day.
