B.C. has another gold medal to add to its collection from the 2009 Canada Games after Richard Weinberger, 19, won the 800-metre men's freestyle Monday.

The Semiahmoo Secondary grad, who swims with the Pacific Coast Swimming Club in Victoria and lives in South Surrey, clocked a time of 7:50.40.

Silver medallist Craig Dagnall of Victoria came in behind him at 7:50.47.

Weinberger will now compete in the 10-kilometre open ocean race tomorrow (Saturday).

He is the current national champion in the event, having won the gold medal at the 2009 National 10k Open Water Championships in Montreal last month.

Continuing the medal-winning streak in P.E.I. this week was Earl Marriott Secondary student Katie Reid, who took bronze in the 400 metre Tuesday, with a time of 55.14.

The 15-year-old Ocean Athletics Track and Field member was just .19 behind silver winner Carly Paracholski, and .55 behind first-placed Kate Ruediger, both from Ontario.

Reid beat her personal best of 55.58.

Fellow track-and-field athlete Nigel Hole of South Surrey ran the men's 800-metre final Thursday after Peace Arch News press deadline.

In preliminaries, Hole came in fourth in his grouping.

White Rock's Kyle Donen saw lots of volleyball action this week with Team B.C., which beat P.E.I. Tuesday, 3-1.

The squad lost its match against Manitoba Wednesday, however, with a score of 3-0.

With two games won and lost, B.C. now moves to the quarter final, where it will face Quebec, which has won four games and lost one.

The winner of that game will meet Alberta in the semi-final.
