Ruggers, Renegades excel at Canada Games

Four Peninsula rugby players are heading to the finals at the 2009 Canada Games, following a 70-0 victory over Alberta Thursday morning.
Cole Coventry, Keaton Styles and Hayden McMullin of Earl Marriott Secondary’s senior boys team, as well as Elgin Park’s Conner Dickie, helped continue the undefeated streak for B.C.’s under-18 squad.
“The forward pack really stepped up and took it to them and battled hard in the trenches and physically owned them,” coach Adam Roberts said Thursday from P.E.I., where the games are being held.
He noted Styles was “unbelievable” at scrum half, while Coventry scored two tries and McMullin scored one.
The team will now play in the final against the winner of an Ontario and Newfoundland game that wasn’t finished by Peace Arch News press deadline Thursday.
Roberts – also head coach at EMS – anticipated playing Ontario, which B.C. tied 7-7 in round-robin play.
“In the round robin, Ontario had an upper hand physically on us,” he said. “Ontario is a big, physical team, but they don’t have the depth and talent we do.”
The final will be held Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
B.C.’s softball team have also been undefeated throughout the games, with a 7-0 record.
More than half the squad – which hasn’t allowed a single run – are White Rock Renegades and another three are Surrey Storm.
They continued their dominance Wednesday, beating Quebec 8-0.
Pitcher Kylie Ellis – just one of eight Renegades on the team – threw a one-hitter with a lot of help from her defence, as she registered four strikeouts.
Kelsey Haberl of Surrey Storm had a double, two singles and an RBI for B.C., while Renegade Charlotte Dolan added a pair of singles. Quebec got a single in the second inning – the team’s only hit.
B.C. went on to play Manitoba Thursday. Results were not available by PAN press deadline.
White Rock divers Keith Tidey and Stephanie Hansen have also been busy competing this week.
On Wednesday, Tidey placed seventh in both the preliminary and final rounds of one-metre springboard. Results from yesterday’s male three-metre springboard were not available by press deadline.
Hansen was eighth in three-metre springboard Wednesday and 10th in the final standings. While she placed 11th in preliminaries for one-metre, final scores were not available by deadline.
The last diving events, springboard three-metre synchro male and female, will be held today (Friday).
Track and field, in which Peninsula residents Katie Reid, Samantha Walkow and Nigel Hole will compete, and volleyball – which will see White Rock’s Kyle Donen on Team B.C. – will begin next week.
