One week after the 1991-born White Rock Renegades won their national fastpitch title, the ’95 team took gold at the Peewee Girls Canadian Softball Championship.

The Peninsula squad placed third at last week’s round robin after winning five of eight games, and went on to win two playoff matches Saturday before facing host team Guelph Gators in Sunday’s final.

“It was definitely a home-field advantage for Guelph because they had a pretty good squad there and there was lots of fans there,” coach Arnie Groenewegen said. “It was a pretty exciting game.”

Brianna Leowen was on the mound for all playoff games, and was “the hot pitcher at the time.”

Despite a homerun hit by Sarah Groenewegen in the final, the Renegades headed into the bottom of the seventh down 3-2.

That was until Leowen stepped up to the plate and – with two outs and two strikes against her – brought in two runs.

“It was extreme pressure but it was definitely a team win,” the coach said of the 4-3 final. “We used everybody to get us to that point and win the whole thing.”

He said the squad stayed focused throughout.

"We just tried to keep telling them to be composed and never give up. They held true to that, and we just said we wanted to play one inning at a time and make sure we win every inning of every game, and they did it."

The 2009 peewee all-stars included Renegades Leowen, Courtnie Neumeyer (third base) and Cheyanne Head (fielder).
