White Rock and South Surrey rugby enthusiasts have plenty to cheer about this month, as more than a dozen young players – and one coach – will compete at national competitions.

British Columbia’s under-18 boys team, which competes next week at Canada Games in P.E.I., will have the largest Peninsula contingent, as three players from Earl Marriott Secondary and another from Elgin Park will suit up.

Cole Coventry, Keaton Style and Hayden McMullin – all key members of the Earl Marriott senior boys squad that finished fourth in B.C. last spring – will all play key roles for Team B.C., and they’ll be joined by Elgin’s Connor Dickie.

In addition, the U18 club is coached by Earl Marriott head coach Adam Roberts.

The Canada Games run Aug. 15-29, with the rugby competition slated for the first week. The boys’ rugby final, scheduled for Aug. 22, will be broadcast on TSN.

Team B.C.’s U16 boys team, which began play this week at the 2009 National Championship Festival in Markham, Ont., also has a strong Peninsula flavour.

Mike and Connor Bouchard – both from EMS – are on the squad, as are Semiahmoo’s Liam Murphy-Burke and Elgin Park’s Kieran Bjornson.

B.C.’s U19 women’s team has already had success in Markham, claiming the silver medal Wednesday after a loss to Ontario.

That squad features Semiahmoo products Sandra Rijken, Sade Smith, Laura Murphy-Burke and Tia Croteau, as well as Casey Jones (EMS).

Another local player, Radhika Sikhakhane, is on the U17 girls’ side. In the boys’ U14 tournament, one Peninsula product, Elgin Park’s Rupert Peers, is suiting up with Team B.C.
