Toigo earns invite to Canucks camp

The Surrey Eagles' top defenceman from last season has earned a tryout with the Vancouver Canucks.

Nolan Toigo, 20, was invited Monday to the National Hockey League club's 2009 rookie camp after a stellar season in Surrey. He also spent time on the roster of the Western Hockey League's Vancouver Giants, where his uncle, Ron Toigo, is majority owner.

After beginning his junior career with the Giants in 2006, Toigo, who is listed at six-foot-one and 190-pounds, left the WHL to join the Eagles, where he has put together a pair of strong seasons.

Last season with the Birds, Toigo – who served as an alternate captain –finished with 16 points and 41 games, and appeared in all nine of the team's playoff contests.

When the Eagles' season finished, Toigo rejoined the Giants for their playoff run and played in 17 post-season games, collecting two points. He also showed some versatility playing in the WHL – he spent much of his time with the Giants at forward, in a third-line checking role.

With Surrey in 2007/08, he tallied 17 points in 38 games.

The Delta native was the co-winner of the Eagles' best defenceman award for the 2008/09 season.
