Members of Ocean Athletics Track and Field Club fought through the weekend heat to scorch the field at the B.C. Junior Development Championships last weekend at South Surrey Athletic Park.

The three-day meet began Friday evening with 13-year-old Brandon Figueroa claiming silver in the 3,000-metres, followed by Julia Greer scooping bronze in the 11-year-old girls’ 400-m. The following day, Greer scored silver in the 800 and Figueroa added bronze in the boys’ 800.

It didn’t take long for more OA members to find the podium – Jake Hanna and Elias Ellison finished first and second in the 12-year-old boys’ 400-m, and Meghan Palesch, 14, won silver in the 400 as well.

On Saturday, all three found themselves on the podium again. Hanna and Ellison were second and third, respectively, in the boys’ 80-m hurdles and 100-m, and Palesch was second in the girls’ 80- and 300-m hurdles and third in the 100-m sprint.

One of Ocean Athletics’ youngest competitors, nine-year-old Mantaj Boparai, also claimed gold in the boys’ long jump, and bronze in both the high jump and hurdles.

On Saturday, 10-year-old Megan Samson was second in the 800-m and third in the 60-m dash, while Max Bueckert was third in the boys’ 800.

In the 13-year-old girls’ 800, Taylor Neveu was second, and in the 14-year-old boys’ 800-m race, Chase Lawler was third and Chris Herron fourth. Neveu added a second silver medal to her tally in the 1,500, and a gold in the high jump.

Collen Butler also made it onto the podium, with a bronze medal in the 14-year-old girls 1,500-m racewalk.

In field events, Max Hanna led the way with a gold medal in the javelin and bronze in long jump, and Jacob Bontkes, 12, won bronze medal in discus.

The medal haul continued for the host club Sunday – Samson scooped her third medal of the weekend with a silver in the 1,500-m, Jake Hanna was first in the 200-m hurdles and second in the 200-m, and Bueckert won his second medal of the event, taking silver in the boys’ 1,500.

Greer also picked up her third medal, placing second in the 11-year-old girls’ 1,500-m, and Jolden Boparai finished third in the same event.

In the 12-year-old boys’ 200, Calen Whitworth won bronze.

Rounding out medallists for Ocean Athletics was Donovan Moore, 11, who won silver in the high jump.
