Five of the eight national women’s softball teams which competed at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China will be going head-to-head at Softball City this weekend, when the first pitch is thrown at the Canada Cup.

The national sqauds will be among 13 teams at the 16th edition of the Canada Cup International Women’s Fastpitch Tournament, which begins Saturday and wraps up with the championship game July 12.

Canada’s national team, which was announced Monday at a press event at Softball City, will be joined on the diamond by the Netherlands, Australia, the United States and Venezuela in the International Division under the new tournament format introduced for this year.

All five teams will be guaranteed a place in the double-knockout playoff round, but will play a double round robin over the first seven days of the tournament.

Three of the eight club teams from the North American Division - which includes five American club teams along with two White Rock Renegades squads and the Delta Sunfire - will also be part of the playoff round.

The women’s tournament is just one of four staged during the week.

Other divisions include the 18-and-under Futures tournament and the 16-and-under Showcase group, both played at Softball City, Sullivan Park and Cloverdale Athletic Park.

The Special Olympics Friendship division rounds out the tournament schedule.

“We’re very excited about the great competition expected at this year’s Canada Cup,” said tournament chairman Glen Todd.
