White Rock native Spencer Bennett, a Surrey Eagles winger, was one of six players selected by the Calgary Flames at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft last weekend in Montreal during the seven-round selection process.
As well, South Surrey's Adam Morrison, a goaltender for the Western Hockey League's Saskatoon Blades, was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round (81st overall).
Bennett, 18, was drafted in the fifth round, 141st overall.
In 60 games played with the Surrey Eagles this season, Bennett has recorded 20 goals, 21 assists, 41 points and 32 penalty minutes.
Weighing in at 187 pounds and standing six-foot-three, he has been described by Eagles coach Shane Kuss as "a very quiet kid."
Earlier this year, Bennett – who joined the Eagles in the off-season, after a trade from the Burnaby Express – agreed to a scholarship with the University of Alaska-Anchorage, to begin in the fall of 2010.
Last winter, he was ranked 93rd among North American skaters for the NHL Entry Draft – the highest ranked BC Hockey League player on the list.
At six-foot-three and 170 pounds, Morrison, 18, just ended his rookie season with the Blades, playing 13 regular season games and sporting a 9-1-1 record. He has a 2.49 goals against average and a .907 save percentage.
He picked up his first career Western Hockey League shutout in his first WHL career start on Sept. 20 against the Prince Albert Raiders.
Morrison is the first pick of the Flyers in this year's Draft.
He was drafted by the Blades in the third round (49th overall) in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft.
