One size won’t fit all: Watts

I would like to thank everyone who recently participated in the City of Surrey’s public-consultation meetings on the proposed single-family (RF) zoning changes.

Public consultation is an important part of any decision. It is clear from the consultation process that a broad consensus across the community does not exist on this issue, and therefore a one-size-fits-all approach will not work.

No solution will be imposed by city hall. No neighbourhood will be changed without the support of the residents.

When issues around house size arose in St. Helens, Royal Heights and Crescent Beach, the community made a request for changes that best fit their neighbourhood. The city listened and responded. We worked to implement a solution that made sense for the residents. The same able principles of fairness and equity apply in this situation.

In order to address this issue, on Monday council passed a motion requesting staff to bring forward a report outlining the policy and procedures that will allow any well-defined neighbourhood within the City of Surrey to initiate a rezoning process for that neighbourhood.

Thank you for making your voice heard as we seek to address this challenge for our dynamic and diverse community.

Mayor Dianne L. Watts, Surrey
