Surrey officer guilty of assault

A Surrey RCMP officer charged with assault in January 2008 was found guilty Wednesday in Chilliwack Provincial Court.

According to a statement from RCMP's E Division, Const. Frank Lambert – a member of the Mounties' Violence Suppression Team with just over five years' service – remains on active duty. Sentencing is tentatively set for February 2010.

The incident that led to the charge took place in July 2007, when Lambert was one of several officers to respond to a break-and-enter in-progress call at a Surrey school.

The officers took six male suspects into custody and Lambert was escorting one to a police car when, after his prisoner made a comment to another prisoner, he was seen pushing his charge's head onto the hood of a police car several times.

The incident was reported to supervisors and investigations began.

In February 2008, the detachment's Officer in Charge found the Code of Conduct investigation "substantiated." Formal discipline was recommended and the matter is awaiting a formal discipline hearing.
