A South Surrey man charged with possessing and accessing child pornography made his first appearance in Surrey Provincial Court Monday.

Dressed in a black jacket, black pants and brown loafers, Douglas Wayne Bowers avoided eye contact as he stood waiting to enter Court 100, a tiny space with one glass wall and little room for spectators.

Once inside, Bowers spoke briefly with the justice of the peace, and a date to obtain counsel was set.

The 60-year-old was charged Friday, after an investigation by the RCMP’s Integrated Child Exploitation Team led police to a man they described as “another prolific distributor of child sexual abuse images and videos online.”

The investigation began last October. A search warrant was executed on a South Surrey home on June 24.

Investigation is ongoing.

Police say so far there is no indication Bowers was involved in the production of child pornography.

He is due back in court on Oct. 19.
