High fives, smiles and cheers greeted cyclists who rolled through East Kensington Elementary Tuesday, the second stop on Day 6 of the Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley ride.
The tour, one of four held every fall in B.C., is a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. It brings police and emergency services personnel together in the fight against childhood cancers.
The East Kensington stop included a ride-through, and two teachers were taped to a pole as part of efforts to raise funds. As well, a junior team member living with an inoperable brain tumour donated her hair for the cause.
CCS’ Kristine Carrick said the tour, which wraps up Friday in Fort Langley, is going well.
“We’re getting great reception from communities, as we always do,” Carrick said.
The riders, one of which has two children at East Kensington, are inspired by the children they tour for, she said.
“In the grand scheme of sore bums and aching legs and maybe being a little bit tired... they always say it’s nothing in the face of a little child that’s got cancer,” Carrick said.
The team also visited Peace Arch, South Meridian and Ray Shepherd elementaries Tuesday, as well as White Rock Christian Academy and the South Point Save-on-Foods.
