In our fourth in a series of online questions to the eight candidates in White Rock's Sept. 12 civic byelection, we ask:
"Is this byelection really necessary?"
Last November, former-councillor James Coleridge was re-elected to serve his 10th term in office, placing third only to fellow CPR running-mates incumbent Doug McLean and newcomer Lynne Sinclair.
In May, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Laura Gerow unseated Coleridge after he admitted repeatedly lying in the lead-up to the election about his knowledge – and authorship – of an e-mail criticizing his political opponents.
Denying his lies were for personal gain, Coleridge says they in no way affected the outcome of the election and that the judgment usurped the will of the people.
Should the 2008 vote have been upheld? Or should the decision forever set a precedent for future elections?
