A Washington woman headed to Vancouver for some shopping last month went home empty-handed after border guards found more than $112,000 cash hidden in the engine compartment of a northbound SUV.
Canada Border Services Agency officers at the Douglas port discovered the bundles of cash with the help of detector dog Timber, during a secondary examination of the vehicle. The money – $112,542 in total – was wrapped in plastic and masking tape.
The funds were seized as suspected proceeds of crime; the female driver, who denied any knowledge of the cash, was returned to the U.S.
Under the Proceeds of Crime and Terrorist Financing Act, there are no restrictions on the value of currency that may be brought in or taken out of Canada.
However, those valued at $10,000 Canadian or more must be reported.
