Family home as thieves search house

A South Surrey family is missing jewelry, baby items and their Ford SUV following a "disturbing" break-and-enter Wednesday morning.
The crime was reported just after 6 a.m. at a home in the 2700-block of 158 Street.
According to police, one or more suspects broke into a vehicle associated to the home and grabbed sundry items left inside, including fishing gear and a passport. A garage-door opener found inside enabled access to a connecting door to the house. That door was unlocked, said Const. Kenn Meglic.
Inside the house, the culprits found keys to a second vehicle – the Ford – and took full advantage, making off with the vehicle and its contents.
The disturbing part is the family was home at the time, as the culprits were "moving about in the house," Meglic said.
Opportunistic residential break-and-enters are on the rise locally, Meglic added. Too many people are not taking basic precautions to protect their property, he said.
"It's folks leaving windows and doors open and the criminal element is taking full advantage of that."
In the above case, the thieves were likely tempted by items left in clear view in the victims' vehicle. What they found along the way facilitated the rest of the crime, Meglic said.
