Are you new to the area or new to 55? If you are interested in joining the Kent Street Activity Centre, this is the ideal time.

Did you know you can visit the Centre up to three times and try out the activities before you need to purchase a membership? Membership to the end of the year is currently half price, only $14. As a Kent Street Activity group member you can participate in a variety of clubs and activities all year round, use the Kent Street lending library and get connected with your community. Drop by the Centre to register and pick up your membership card.

If you are looking for adventure in September, we have some great day excursions coming up. On Wednesday, Sept. 9, join us as we travel to the Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria to visit the North American premiere of Treasures: the World’s Cultures from the British Museum. On Thursday, Sept. 24, we travel to Sidney for the day with Joy Brown. The day includes a boat cruise, time to explore the seaside town and afternoon tea in a 1910 schoolhouse.

For more information or to register for either of these excursions, call 604-541-2231.

Do you love to sing? You don’t need to have a good voice – just a good attitude – to drop down to the Kent Street Activity Centre and spend an afternoon with the Sing Along group. This upbeat group meets Tuesday afternoons from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. Piano accompaniment and song sheets are provided.

If you have noticed a change in your hearing, it may be time to have it tested. Free hearing tests for seniors are scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Kent Street. Local company Boardwalk Hearing will be doing the testing and can help with minor hearing aid checks and cleaning. Call 604-541-2231 to book an appointment.

Board the White Rock Leisure Services' mini bus and head to the Tong Louie YMCA for the new 'Gentle Joints' warm water fitness program – featuring a warmer water temperature and a moveable bottom floor. Enjoy a combination of body movements, stretches and exercises in a friendly, social atmosphere. The bus leaves at 10 a.m. and returns at approximately 1 p.m. There is eight sessions and the program starts Sept. 15. For more information or to register, call 604-541-2231.

This fall, the Centre is again offering Saturday ukulele group lessons instructed by the Langley Ukulele Association. Beginner lessons will run from 10 – 11:30 a.m. and the intermediate class will run from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. These fun and easy lessons will teach you how to hold, pick and strum a ukulele – and a few songs, too. Call 604-541-2231 for more information or to register. Classes start Sept. 19.

Many activity groups will be returning after Labour Day. The Coffee Shop reopens Tuesday, Sept. 8. Freshly made soup, sandwiches and baked goods will be on the menu. The Computer Club returns Sept. 9 and anyone who is interested in learning and sharing information about the computing world is welcome to attend. Also back on Sept. 9 is the Wednesday night dances. Singles and couples 50+ are most welcome to attend. The first dance back features the music of Sentimental Journey.

The Kent Street Activity Centre located at 1475 Kent St. is open to persons 55 years of age or better. New members welcome. For information on activities, programs and volunteer opportunities please call the Centre at 541-2231 or visit www.city.whiterock.bc.ca
