Happy Canada Day! Head down to the waterfront July 1 for a host of activities taking place at both East and West Beaches.

Attend the opening ceremonies on the main stage at West Beach beginning at 2:30 p.m., then find your spot for the fireworks display beginning at dusk.

Although some programs are taking a hiatus this summer, there are still many activities to keep you busy and active at Kent Street Activity Centre throughout July and August.

The carpet bowling group is playing through the summer months and they invite you to come out and join them to learn this fun and easy sport.

Carpet bowlers meet Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. until noon. Beginners are welcome.

The Table Tennis group is always looking for new members, as well. This lively bunch welcomes players of all abilities at their sessions. Drop by on Mondays from 2-6 p.m., Wednesdays from 2:45-4:15 p.m. or Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and try your hand with a paddle.

Drop-in Mah Jong also continues through the summer months, meeting Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Kent Street.

The game involves a combination of skill, strategy and calculation, as well as a certain degree of chance. Whatever it is they do with the tiles, dice, racks and chips, Mah Jong is a lot of fun.

We welcome anyone who would like to have their hearing tested to drop by Kent Street on Wednesday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m. for a free test courtesy of Boardwalk Hearing.

Please book your appointment by calling the centre at 604-541-2231.

Do you own a laptop computer but are not sure how to operate it yet?

Then you might consider signing up for the Laptop Introduction to Computers Camp beginning Monday, July 13 at the White Rock Community Centre.

Bring your laptop and learn hands-on about your desktop, how to work with folders, viewing resources, copying and deleting files using Windows XP.

The course runs for four consecutive mornings, beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at noon.

Gentle stretching, proper breathing techniques and deep relaxation allow the body and mind to come alive with renewed energy.

Join instructor Alison Polacco on Monday afternoons at the White Rock Community Centre from 1:30-2:45 p.m. for seniors’ yoga.

This is a brilliant way to stay active this summer. Pre-registration required.

Why not take in some free outdoor concerts this summer?

The City of White Rock Waterfront Concert Series takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-4 p.m. during July and August on the boardwalk in front of the museum.

On July 4, enjoy the music of the Fifteenth Field Artillery Brass Quartet. You will love the energy of these professional musicians as they play everything from classical music to show tunes.

On July 5, you can listen to the music of Brian Thomas – a Celtic-folk songwriter whose performances re-capture the storytelling tradition of music.

Please note, summer office hours are now in effect at Kent Street Activity Centre.

The office is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and closed Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays.

The centre is scheduled to be shut down for maintenance Monday, July 27 to Monday, Aug. 3. We re-open for business on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 8:30 a.m.

We encourage all our volunteers to take a well deserved break during this period!

The Kent Street Activity Centre, located at 1475 Kent St., is open to people 55 years of age or better. For information on activities, programs and volunteer opportunities, call 604-541-2231.
