Peace Arch Park was abuzz with activity last week as 300 people participated in Strides for Strokes, a fundraiser for the Stroke Recovery Association of B.C.
White Rock hosted 11 other Lower Mainland branches for the Sunday vent, which saw Mr. Bubbles the clown perform stilt walking, juggling, unicycling and a magic show, while wandering musician Ish Da Fish sang folk/blues music. Face painting, refreshments and prizes were also featured.
The walk kicked off at 11 a.m., and was led by White Rock Mayor Catherine Ferguson and local meteorologist Mark Madryga, who MCed the fundraiser.
Instead of T-shirts, umbrellas were given out for the walk, the theme for which was ‘Weathering the Storm Together.’
“There was a little bit of a mention of that – that having a stroke is like having a storm in your brain, and because the effects of stroke are long lasting, the recovery and rehabilitation phase is a very long journey,” Sandra Davidson, Strides for Strokes committee member, said.
Altogether, the branches raised $16,000. The White Rock branch collected $6,900, which will benefit local programming, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy.
“The need in the community is really quite huge,” Davidson said.
