Artists' work for sale
Updated: November 05, 2009 9:40 AM
An exhibition and sale will showcase works by the group Artists of Bernie’s Barn, this weekend (Nov. 7-8) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Semiahmoo House, 15306 24 Ave.
This is the fourth show for the group – including artists Bernard Major, Bette Laughy, Carole Rayer, Dianne Lynne, Jennifer Demery, Joan McLardy, Karen Pohlmann, Ron Barnhart and Vivian Link – who have met to share inspiration and work side by side in a converted barn on Bernie Major’s south Langley property every Thursday for several years.
The show will also include a memorial display of work by Surrey landscape artist Stu Richardson, a founding member of the group, who passed away in January of this year.
Admission is by donation to the Semiahmoo House Society.
Book signing
Legendary Vancouver band leader Dal Richards will be front and centre at Black Bond Books, Semiahmoo Centre this Saturday (Nov. 7, 1:30 p.m.) for a signing of his new book, The Dal Richards Story, co-authored by former sports columnist Jim Taylor.
The book, published by Harbour Publishing, recounts many of the 90-year-old musician and broadcaster’s anecdotes from a more than seven-decade career in music including radio and television work.
For more information, call Black Bond Books at 604-536-3336.
Choir returns
Vancouver-based men’s choir Chor Leoni, which has sung several Christmas and spring concerts at South Surrey’s Church of the Good Shepherd, will return to the church this weekend for an additional presentation of its annual Remembrance Day concert.
Stolen Voices, this Sunday (Nov. 8, 3 p.m.) at the church, 2250 150 St., takes as its inspiration one of war’s most haunting images – the terrified, haunted expressions of children caught up in a cataclysm they can barely understand – together with readings of children’s and youths’ war diaries.
Selections from these will be interspersed with powerful new music, including works by Vancouver composers Jocelyn Morlock, Marcus Goddard, Larry Nickel and Ken Cormier.
The concert is performed without applause so that, in the words of Chor Leoni’s Bruce Hoffman, “audience members can be in their own space with memory and reflection.”
For tickets, call Ticketmaster at 604-280-3311.
