It's a real draw.
At the upcoming South Surrey and White Rock Art Society Show (Sept. 5-7, 10 to 5 p.m. daily, Semiahmoo House, 15306 24 Ave.) one of the attractions for visitors will be entering a draw for a tribute to one of the most famous art pieces in the world.
The 30 by 40-inch version of Van Gogh's iconic Irises was handpainted by 11 different society artists using five different media – oils, acrylics, watercolour, pastel and collage.
Proceeds of the draw will support the society's scholarship fund, which annually assists a student entering the Emily Carr College of Art and Design.
The spectacular group painting will be on display all through the show, which is open to the public by donation to the Semiahmoo House Society, assisting children and adults who have special needs.
The art show will also feature more than 100 original art works by members of the society, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Founded in 1959, the society now boasts a roster of 120 artists of all skill levels from beginner to accomplished, but all interested in learning, improving and having fun with art.
Most popular media are watercolours, acrylics and oils, and members have the oppportunity to improve skills through monthly demos and critiques by recognized professional artists.
The library has a vast array of art books, videos and DVDs available for loan to members at no charge.
Painting challenges are held throughout the year for all members, helping participants to learn and also try new ideas and themes.
From May through September, a plein air group meets weekly for painting sessions; an indoor group also gets together once a week from September through June.
While the society has given scholarships to young artists for many years this year it has seven candidates who have graduated from local high schools and are headed to Emily Carr in the fall.
The society's scholarships are open each year to graduates of Elgin Park, Semiahmoo Secondary, Earl Marriott and White Rock Christian Academy.
The succesful artist will be announced by Emily Carr College in September.
