Wheat In The Barley
The Wheat In The Barley will be bringing their fusion of folk tunes and funky rhythms back to the Coast Capital Playhouse, 1532 Johnston Rd., on Saturday (Aug. 15) at 8 p.m.
The popular South Surrey band's appearance is the second in White Rock Players Club's ongoing series of Music In The Theatre fundraising concerts.

Waterfront concerts
The City of White Rock's Waterfront Concert series continues to entertain passersby through August, Saturdays and Sundays, 2-4 p.m. outside the White Rock Museum and Archives on Marine Drive.
Coming up are seasoned entertainer Marv Goble with dynamic 16 year-old vocalist Joe Given, this Saturday (Aug. 15), and the a cappella harmonies of the Pacific Showtime Chorus, Sunday, Aug. 16., followed by the Blue Voodoo Duo (Aug. 22) and the Fifteenth Field Artillery Clarinet Quartet (Aug. 23).
Panto auditions
Auditions for the next White Rock Players Club Christmas pantomime, Snow White, take place Sunday (Aug. 16), 1-6 p.m., plus Monday Aug. 17, 6-9 p.m., and Sunday Aug. 23, 2-7 p.m. at the Coast Capital Playhouse, 1532 Johnston Rd.
Director Susanne De Pencier is looking for 20 characters plus villagers for the panto, and says she needs actors of "all ages, shapes and sizes."

Trad jazz
While White Rock Traditional Jazz Society's season is on summer hiatus, house band Red Beans & Rice will continue to play 3-6 p.m. on Sundays through August at the Royal Canadian Legion Crescent Branch 240 (2643 128 St.),
Among upcoming guests with the band will be well-known concert guitarist Jake Langley, Jimmy Marsh and Gerry Green of the Grand Dominion Jazz Band, plus two younger generations of Honeywells playing along with leader Rice Honeywell. Also sitting in regularly with the band are WRTJS director Dave Ayton (clarinet) and stride pianist Peg Thomson.
On Aug. 30 the band will welcome performers Gary Church and Cheryl Thurston of Phoenix, AZ., plus rising trumpeter and vocalist Bria Skonberg.
The society's regular schedule of 3-6 p.m. Sunday sessions runs September to May at the legion, featuring house band Red Beans & Rice in rotation with other notable Dixieland bands from Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

Talent Search
There's a chance to support local talent, and hear a sizzling serving of the blues, as White Rock Blues Society's annual talent search returns this Sunday – Aug. 16 – 7-10 p.m. at West Beach Bar and Grill.
Four bands will be presented in this second night of competition. The finals, on Aug. 23 will also feature a performance by last year's winners, Sam & Luke.
Among confirmed contestants for this year's talent search are James Shepherd, Tom Vander Kam and Mike Fabro, plus the Some x 6 Blues Band, the Madison Blues Band and Big Sandy.
First prize includes recording time at Turtle Studios.

Sean Hayden
Peninsula singer-songwriter Sean Hayden will celebrate the release of his self-titled debut CD, Friday Aug. 21, 8 p.m. at Southpoint Station Pub.
Guitarist-vocalist Hayden, whose organic rock reflects his pop-jazz background, recorded the eight track EP in Boston, Ma. at Mix One Studios, important in the careers of such famous artists as John Mayer and Aerosmith.
Roadhouse Five
Rice Honeywell Sr. – well known as front man for Dixielanders Red Beans and Rice – has a new band with a swing emphasis,
Rice Honeywell and the Roadhouse Five, playing Saturday nights in late August and early September, 8-10 p.m., at the Roadhouse Grille, 1763 King George Hwy.
As well as Honeywell on cornet and piano, the band includes equally well-respected musicians Jack Stafford (clarinet), Don Ogilvie (guitar), Ken Ogilvie (bass) and Roadhouse partner Bill Buurmeester (drums).
Upcoming dates are Aug. 22, 29; Sept. 5, 12.
Honeywell also plays solo jazz piano during dinner at the restaurant, Aug. 21-22, 28-29, Sept. 5, 11-13, 20, 25-26.
