White rock singer-songwriter Jordan Carrier will play at The Venue in Vancouver Thursday, opening for Canadian rock bands Wide Mouth Mason and The Odds.

Popular White Rock singer-songwriter Jordan Carrier (Absence of Wonder) can be seen in a high profile Vancouver show this Thursday (June 25) at The Venue (formerly The Plaza, 881 Granville St.) opening for Widemouth Mason and The Odds.
The former Cozy Bones frontman won new currency in the industry – and many new fans – by placing among the five finalists of last year's Fox Seeds contest.
Doors open at 9 p.m. and tickets ($27.50 plus service charges) are available from all Ticketmaster outlets, 604-280-4444 or www.ticketmaster.ca
On July 9, Carrier will also appear in an industry showcase across the street at the Roxy (932 Granville St.).
Tickets are $7 at the door, or $5 in advance from Scratch, Zulu Records, Tom Lee or Long & McQuade.
Poetry reading
Heather Spears, long recognized as one of Canada's finest poets and artists, will be reading in White Rock this week.
Spears will read from her latest collection of poetry, I Can Still Draw, June 25, 7:30 p.m. at Pelican Rouge Coffee House, Central Plaza (16 Avenue at 152 Street).
Although she has called Denmark her home since 1962, Spears continues to make annual reading and lecture tours to Canada.
She has held more than 75 solo art exhibitions, and published 11 collections of poetry and three novels. I Can Still Draw is a fionalist for one of Canada's most prestigious literary awards, the League of Canadian Poets' Pat Lowther Prize.
The local reading is sponsored by the Community Arts Council of White Rock and District.

ARTS 2009
Opening reception is June 25, 7 p.m. for the Arts Council of Surrey's exhibition ARTS 2009 at Surrey Art Gallery, 13750 88 Ave.
Running to Aug. 30 the arts council's 25th annual juried show will feature 54 works by artists from Surrey and surrounding municipalities, representing a broad spectrum of styles and themes, with work ranging from traditional paintings, to innovative uses of new media.

Jenkins Showler Atrium
Next Atrium show at Jenkins Showler Gallery, 1539 Johnston Rd,, will feature oil on canvas landscapes by Pieter Molenaar, June 28-July 11.
Molenaar, who studied art in Amsterdam before coming to Canada in 1979, draws on memory, photographs and observation to create a blend of realism and impressionistic techniques in evocative landscapes often dominated by dramatic skies.
Opening will be Sunday, June 28, 1-4 p.m.
Molenaar's show will be followed by acrylic abstracts by Chantal de Serres, running July 12-25.
A native of Verdun, Quebec, de Serres graduated from Concordia University with a Fine Arts degree in 1990.
Her art is a reflection of her inner self which she expresses through the movement and colour of her paintings.
Opening will be Sunday, July 12, 1-4 p.m.

Dearly Departed
White Rock Players Club's final show of the current season, Dearly Departed, by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones, closes June 27 at Coast Capital Playhouse, 1532 Johnston Rd.
Performances are at 8 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.
Produced by Gordon Mantle and directed by Dale Kelly, the comedy concerns the eccentric, troubled members of the Turpin clan, denizens of the U.S.' Southern backwoods, and their desperate attempts to pull themselves together for the family patriarch's funeral.

The Community Arts Council of White Rock and District Gallery Show presents Drawing On Life Art Group: More Than Life until June 27 at the Community Arts Council gallery, suite 90 1959 152 St..
Each week, the 26 artists of the Drawing On Life Group meet to draw from a live model.
The artists also work in a variety of other art forms, and for this show, they will exhibit their individual work, as well as their figure studies.
The work will cover a variety of subjects, from realism to abstraction; in oils, watercolours, acrylics, pastel and collage.

White Rock Traditional Jazz Society's 2008-9 season has concluded, but there's good news for fans of Dixieland.
House band Red Beans & Rice will continue to play at the Royal Canadian Legion Crescent Branch 240 (2643 128 St.) branch, 3-6 p.m. on Sundays through the summer, including dates on July 5, 12, 19 and 26.
The society's regular schedule of 3-6 p.m. Sunday sessions runs September to May at the legion, featuring house band Red Beans & Rice in rotation with other notable Dixieland bands from Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

Mikelson show
The 36th annual Arnold Mikelson Festival of Arts, will be held on the weekends of July 11 and 12, and July 18 and 19, at the Mind and Matter Gallery, 13743 16 Ave. (South Surrey).
Official opening will be Saturday, July 11 at 1:30 p.m. with Rick Forchuk as master of ceremonies.
The festival, which takes place on three acres of gardens designed by the late painter and sculptor, gives artists an opportunity to expose and sell their art, while meeting with the public and demonstrating techniques.
The event will feature artists in all media, including painting, pottery, wood and stone sculpture, glass blowing, batiks, jewelry and silk paintings.
