High demand for cycling opportunities for those aged 50 and older has sparked a new club on the Semiahmoo Peninsula.
An open meeting detailing the over-50s bike club is to take place Tuesday (Dec. 1) evening at Kent Street Activity Centre.
The club is an initiative of South Surrey Cycles and White Rock Leisure Services, driven by interest in city programs catering to the demographic.
The city's fitness series was so popular, organizers had to triple the number of classes, said South Surrey Cycles' Barry Dalziel, who has lead cycling groups for the city since last year.
"One of the questions that was always asked at the end is, what else is there?"
Until now, Dalziel couldn't answer that question.
An annual $30 club fee will include membership to leisure services, noted WRLS' John Stech.
Stech and Dalziel said a key aspect of the non-competitive club is its form and direction will be decided by the members. It is anticipated weekly rides and day trips will be among plans that develop.
Stech said he was "impressed and just a little bit surprised" by the level of interest in the club.
He and Dalziel lauded affordability and fitness as among the benefits of cycling. It's also easier on the joints than many other sports.
Tuesday's meeting gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Kent Street Activity Centre is located at 1475 Kent St.
