Surrey-Panorama MLA Stephanie Cadieux has spoken in the B.C. Legislature to recognize the efforts of Dr. Roy Strang, a forestry advocate instrumental in the designation of a local treasure, the Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest.

“I had the privilege of meeting one of Surrey-Panorama’s seniors, a man who has contributed greatly to the fabric of our community for more than 33 years,” Cadieux said about Dr. Strang, a retired registered professional forester.

Cadieux described a 1986 meeting to determine designation of the area, now known as the Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest.

Dr. Strang, and a group of concerned citizens, formed the “Save our Sunnyside” action group to convince the community that the area was worth preserving.

Through perseverance and hard work, the group was instrumental in designating a 130-hectare area of tranquil woodland as an urban forest park.

The action group became the Sunnyside Acres Heritage Society and continues to steward the park, providing education and management.

“Dr. Strang graciously accompanied me on a tour of the park last week, showcasing the accessible trail that was developed. He provided a phenomenal commentary about the flora and fauna, and the natural change that is currently underway.

“It’s a wonderful place to walk, to sit, to bike-ride or to jog,” Cadieux said.

“I join Dr. Strang in inviting you to visit Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest, perhaps at the end of March for the blooming of the trillium. And I thank Dr. Strang for his longstanding and ongoing commitment to preserving this urban oasis.”
