Spend the day planting at Blackie Spit
Updated: November 04, 2009 4:42 PM
Volunteers are needed to help plant trees and shrubs and place mulch at the Blackie Spit Savenye Environmentally Sensitive Area Saturday (Nov. 7).
The effort is part of the ongoing Forage Fish Spawning Project, launched by the non-profit Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society to raise awareness of forage fish such as herring, sand lance and surf smelt that spawn in the intertidal zone of local beaches.
The fish are important food sources for larger predators such as salmon, whales, dolphins, porpoises, sea lions and seabirds.
However, human action has threatened the habitat, and caused their populations to decline, FOSBS officials say.
Saturday’s work, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is another step in efforts to turn that trend around.
Anyone interested in pitching in is welcome.
Surrey Parks staff have been conducting site preparation all week, including cutting cork elm, removing roots and delivering mulch.
Volunteers are asked to bring a lunch and dress for the weather.
Extra gloves and shovels will be available, however those who have their own are encouraged to bring them.
Those planning to help should park next to the path adjacent to the sailing club. Signs will be posted to guide participants to the ESA.
Refreshments will be provided.
Anyone interested can e-mail blueheron@birdsonthebay.ca for more information or to confirm attendance.
