Two Surrey residents were among six Trinity Western University students to receive an Undergraduate Student Research Award last summer.

Jessica Vanderploeg and Simon Steunenberg each received $4,500 to support completion of a 16-week, approved research project.

The award, granted by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, is meant to stimulate students’ interest in natural science research and provide undergraduates with valuable, supervised research experience.

“These awards are quite significant in that they come from NSERC, which is the primary funding agency for scientific research in Canada,” said Dr. Craig Montgomery, TWU's professor and chair of chemistry and assistant dean of science.

Vanderploeg, who graduated TWU in the spring with a BA in biology and is working on her masters' at McMaster University, completed her research project in developmental biology.

Steunenberg, a third-year biology major at Trinity Western, researched an invasive species of cranberry plants which threatens native plants in the Langley Bog. He plans to pursue a medical degree upon graduating.
