Southridge School is marking 15 years in the community with a celebration featuring Canadian politician, broadcaster and diplomat Stephen Lewis.
The event is to take place Nov. 20 at the Bell Centre for Performing Arts.
"We love the fact that he's a Canadian and he's done such wonderful work," Southridge's Debbie MacDougall said, explaining the choice of speaker.
"The mission of our school, in a nutshell, is educating students will make a difference in the world. He embodies that."
Lewis, who is currently a professor in global health in the faculty of social sciences at McMaster University, has numerous accolades and achievements under his belt, including an appointment to help investigate the genocide in Rwanda. His work with the United Nations spanned more than two decades.
MacDougall said the evening event will feature an hour talk followed by an opportunity to ask questions of Lewis.
MacDougall said if she had the chance, she would get Lewis's thoughts on removing aid from African countries; whether what has been done so far has discouraged the people from rising up to help themselves.
"Is what we're doing enabling them to continue what they're doing? I bet he would have quite a bit to say about that," she said.
Tickets to the Nov. 20 event are $75; $50 for Southridge alumni. They may be ordered online at www.southridge.bc.ca
The evening includes canapes and cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Lewis will speak at 7:45, followed by dessert and cocktails at 9 p.m.
The Bell Centre is located at 6250 144 St. For more information, call 604-542-5385.
