Elementary and secondary school students can ride public transit for free next week, as part of TransLink’s efforts to mark International Walk to School Week, Oct. 5-9.

The week is about more than walking, officials explained. It’s also about discovering alternatives to using private vehicles to get around.

Students can explore the entire Metro Vancouver transit system for free, from buses to SkyTrain to SeaBus and the West Coast Express.

High school students will have to show their GoCard to take advantage of the offer. It’s recommended teachers planning to use transit for class field trips schedule their outings for between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to avoid heavy commuter traffic.

TransLink is also encouraging commuters to try out ride-sharing next week.

People who sign up to share a vehicle at www.ride-share.com have a chance at prizes including gas vouchers and coupons for BC Ferries.

The online ride-share service matches commuters with others on a similar schedule who are willing to share their cars. Car owners and passengers are connected and then work out the fine points between themselves.
