A friend to all
White Rock resident Mildred King celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this month.
Mildred King, a White Rock resident of 50 years, celebrated turning 100 Aug. 9 – four days after her actual birthday – with friends and family at Crescent Gardens Retirement Community.
Born in Vancouver, King eventually settled in Burnaby where she worked in a fabric store.
The family home is still on Edmonds Street, where the youngest brother (now 92) of six siblings still lives.
She married Rev. Ernest King when she was 40, and the couple retired to the Peninsula.
Niece Norma Murray said King – whose husband died more than 20 years ago – had a large garden on Bishop Road, and was known for growing roses.
“She would take good care of this huge property on her own until she was bound to have the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s.”
Murray said King is a good friend to all and highly respected, even in Crescent Gardens.
“They call her the queen,” she said. “She’s a tiny, very gracious lady, very receptive to guests, always a good hostess.
“Just a sweet, sweet person.”
