It's raining cats and kittens at the Surrey SPCA, and officials hope an adopt-a-thon to take place Saturday (July 4) will ease the load.

The shelter is at capacity with more than 100 of the furry friends due to an influx of kittens from summer litters and the return of adult cats from Petcetera stores, the pet-supply chain that filed for bankruptcy last month.

“We’ve got long-haired cats, short-haired cats, black cats, white cats, brown cats, tabbies, calicos and torties galore,” said branch manager Valerie Sigler, of the shelter's feline charges.

The 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. adopt-a-thon is focused on finding permanent homes for the kittens.

There is also a need for temporary foster homes for mother cats with litters, orphaned kittens who need bottle-feeding, and injured and adult cats.

Sigler said the adopt-a-thon is "a great way to get to know a lot of kittens in a very short time."

The Surrey shelter is located at 6706 152 St.
