Good Samaritans may have saved a man from a watery grave Tuesday, after impact of a collision flipped his car into a water-filled ditch.

Officers with Surrey RCMP's Criminal Collision Unit are investigating the 6:30 a.m. crash, which occurred when a Chevrolet Malibu westbound on 40 Avenue failed to stop at the stop sign and hit a Honda that was southbound on 168 Street.

The Honda driver, a 57-year-old Surrey man, was trapped when his car landed in the ditch upside-down.

"Basically, the vehicle went off (the road), some Good Samaritan spotted it and they went into the water and pulled the occupant out," said Sgt. Roger Morrow.

Morrow said three people were involved in rescue effort, actions he described as "absolutely" commendable.

Drivers of both vehicles were taken to hospital with what are believed non-lifethreatening injuries. The intersection was closed to traffic for about 1½ hours while police inspected the scene.

Charges are pending.
