Spartans break into win column

The Trinity Western Spartans were road warriors over the weekend, notching their first two Canada West conference victories of the season.

The men’s basketball team improved to 2-1 after a 83-63 win over the Brandon Bobcats (1-5) on Friday and 81-74 over the Regina Cougars (1-3) the next night.

In the first game, the Spartans used strong second and third quarters to break open a close game. The team out-scored the hosts 43-21 over those two periods.

The Spartans used some hot shooting as they hit on 53 per cent of their field goal attempts.

Jacob Doerksen led the team with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Calvin Westbrook had 17 points.

Louis Hurd came off the bench to chip in 15 points and four assists.

Saturday’s game was much closer as Trinity Western won by seven points.

Lance Verhoeff led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds, while Tyrell Mara had 11 points, 16 rebounds and four assists.

The Spartans and the Victoria Vikes renew their first round playoff series from last season when they square off at the Langley Events Centre tonight (Friday) and Saturday.

The Trinity Western Spartans broke into the win column with an impressive 73-45 win last Friday night over the Brandon Bobcats.

Led by the duo of Emily Knauff (26 points, six rebounds) and Lauren Doubroff (20 points, nine rebounds) the Spartans won all four periods to coast to victory in a battle of winless teams.

The Spartans hit on 47 per cent of their shots and an impressive 55 per cent from beyond the three-point arc.

The win streak was short-lived however, as Trinity Western dropped a 66-37 decision to the Regina Cougars the next night.

The team was plagued by poor shooting as they hit just 28 per cent of their field goal attempts.

The Spartans host the Victoria Vikes tonight (Friday) and Saturday as the team makes their Langley Events Centre home debut.
