Knights fall to Bears

A recap of action for North Langley community football:

Midget

The North Langley Bears jumped out to an early 14-0 lead as they downed the Meadow Ridge Knights 25-7.

Liam Howe connected with Jim Culley on a 30-yard touchdown pass on the team’s first offensive play, and the Bears’ second touchdown came when Bergin Zebi took a bad snap on a field goal attempt and found Kristian McQuade in the end zone.

Luke Johannesson added a field goal and a single to round out the first half scoring.

Spencer Farbatuk added a 30-yard score late in the game to complete the scoring.

The Bears dominated for much of the game, as Farbatuk — who was well over 100 yards rushing — and Ryan Jongenburger ground out a lot of yardage in the run game, but the team turned the ball over. The defence, however, did not allow the Knights to capitalize on the turnovers.

Howe led the aerial attack, spreading the ball among his receiver corps of Zebi, McQuade, Culley and Landon Gillies. Howe also had a 40-yard gain himself.

The Knights offence faced a solid defensive unit, as Garry Wood, John-Mark Welsh, Josh Howard, Jerry Feenstra, Sean Deppner and Kory Nicholson clogged the middle.

And when Meadow Ridge was able to get past the first wave of tacklers, Aaron Kelly, Terrence Lewis, Dan Sisk, Jongenburger and Farbatuk were there to make the stop.

Ryan Sandau, Anthony Mihhailenko, Luke Clements and Johannesson were also solid in containing the outside.

Atom

The North Langley Bears held tough in the first half, but were worn down by the bigger Chilliwack Giants in the second, falling 32-18.

The score had been tied at 12 at the break.

Charlie May scored all three North Langley touchdowns.

The Bears are 4-5 and hold the final playoff spot heading into the season finale.

Bantam

Luke Wildeman and Jonathan Quon scored a touchdown apiece, but the Bears fell 49-12 to Chilliwack.
