A win and a tie are what the Trinity Western Spartans men's soccer team have to show for after an opening weekend trip to the Prairies.

The Spartans defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 on Saturday in Saskatoon before drawing 1-1 with the Alberta Golden Bears on Sunday in Edmonton.

The host Huskies jumped ahead 1-0 early in the second half, but Jason Wiens responded back for the Spartans seven minutes later.

Shawn Parkes and David Rowse then scored in the final five minutes to give new head coach Pat Rohla his first win with the Spartans.

"We probably stole the milk off the porch today," commented Rohla. "Credit to Saskatchewan ... they were very well balanced and kept us off balance for most of the game.

"But we found a way to get through it and we found a way to rise above it, so overall, I'm very pleased with the result, but we need to improve our performance."

Wiens was at it again the next day as well, as his goal, in the fourth minute, helped erase an early 1-0 deficit as Trinity Western tied Alberta 1-1.

Goalkeeper Andrew Fink came up big in the game, making seven saves as his team was out-shot 8-2. Fink also has six saves the game before.

Rohla felt his team let some valuable points slip away in the match.

"We let one get away; we had two good chances to get the go-ahead goal but were unable to get them.

"But as poorly as we played, we were still able to create chances, which is a bright spot for us."

The coach also complimented the play of Liam McAllister, Wiens, and Paul Hamilton. The trio did a tremendous job of holding the fort while Alberta had Trinity Western under pressure for much of the first half.

The Spartans (1-0-1) play their first home games of the season this weekend as they host the Calgary Dinos (1-1-0) on Friday and the Lethbridge Pronghorns (0-2-0)on Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
