Junior hockey is hitting the radio airwaves this season as the Langley Chiefs will be broadcast on the Team 1040.
Starting with the Chiefs home opener — the team’s first-ever regular season game at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday, Sept. 12 — the Team 1040 will broadcast about 15 or so games this upcoming hockey season.
The games broadcast will feature Langley, Surrey and Burnaby, the league’s three Lower Mainland teams.
Langley head coach and general manager Harvey Smyl is excited with the new partnership.
“We think the exposure will help generate even more excitement for the Chiefs, the BCHL, and the Events Centre,” he said.
“September 12 was already going to be an exciting night for the league and Langley. Adding the Team (1040) to the mix just builds it up even more.”
Sitting in the broadcast booth for the play-by-play will be Blake Price while former NHLer and BCHL alum Dave Tomlinson will provide the colour commentary.
The pair also do the Midday Show each day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Team 1040.
There will be about seven to 10 Chiefs games broadcast on the radio station, with the details still being worked out, according to Jared Harman, the Chiefs manager of marketing and sales.
The rest of the Chiefs games will still be broadcast on the Internet through the BCHL website.
“This is just some added exposure,” Harman said.
The deal came to fruition when Harman approached the radio station about what could be done to highlight the Chiefs’ first-ever game at the LEC.
“(The radio station) kind of suggested this and away we went,” Harman said.
“(Team) 1040 is the only sports station in the city and it is obviously where people go for their sports, and having Chiefs games on the radio is a huge thing.
“It lends credibility not to just our team but to our league (that) we are a good hockey product,” he added.
“They would not air any of our games if they did not think the BCHL was good hockey.”
